Seider scores in OT, Red Wings complete home-and-home sweep of Capitals

DETROIT -- Moritz Seider scored at 4:36 of overtime, and the Detroit Red Wings completed a home-and-home sweep of the Washington Capitals with a 3-2 win at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday.

Seider, who had a goal and an assist in Detroit’s 5-2 victory at Washington on Saturday, won it with a one-timer in the right face-off circle off a feed from Andrew Copp.

“I thought [Copp] did a great job of drawing the forward in and creating a little space,” Seider said. “I was just glad it went in and we were able to seal the deal.”

Lucas Raymond and John Leonard also scored, and Copp and Emmitt Finnie each had two assists for the Red Wings (21-13-3), who are 4-1-0 in their past five games and 7-2-0 in their past nine. Cam Talbot made 31 saves.

Ethen Frank scored twice, and Dylan Strome had two assists for the Capitals (19-12-5), who have lost five of six (1-3-2). Charlie Lindgren made 24 saves.

“I thought we played a good hockey game,” Washington coach Spencer Carbery said. “We had a lot of chances to score. They didn’t fall our way, and then the kid makes a play in overtime. But if we keep creating those opportunities, they are going to end up in the net.”

Frank gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 14:17 of the first period. He skated down the right wing and took advantage of Albert Johansson’s stumble to break in alone and beat Talbot between his pads.

“Part of my job is to do that a little more consistently,” said Frank, who has 10 goals in 49 NHL games. “If I can do that more often it will help the team.”

Washington outshot Detroit 14-5 in the first.

“We knew they weren’t pleased with their effort yesterday, but we didn’t match what they did early tonight,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “[Talbot] kept us in it long enough for us to find our game, and we got the win.”

Raymond tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 8:37 of the second period, putting a low wrist shot past Lindgren’s glove from beyond the right circle.

Leonard then gave Detroit a 2-1 lead at 13:44 when Alex DeBrincat’s shot through traffic deflected in off his leg.

Leonard has three points (two goals, one assist) in four games since being recalled from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League on Dec. 15.

“That kind of impact is what you always hope for when a guy comes up,” McLellan said. “He was playing great in Grand Rapids, and he’s got some experience. He’s played in the League before (74 NHL games). That helps with the nerves.”

Frank scored his second goal of the game at 10:22 of the third period, beating Talbot through traffic to tie it 2-2. It was his second two-goal game of the season (Nov. 20 against the Montreal Canadiens).

“[Frank] got us a point tonight,” Carbery said. “He scores two massive goals, including the game-tying goal in the third at a point where you are really pushing for an equalizer.

“He has stepped up big time for us, which is why he’s getting an expanded role.”

NOTES: Copp has 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in his past 10 games. … Red Wings forward Patrick Kane (upper body) missed his fourth straight game and will not play against the Dallas Stars here on Tuesday. … Washington defenseman John Carlson got his 590th career assist, moving him past Ryan Suter for fifth in NHL history among United States-born defensemen.
